No Holiday Today
October 12 is the "Día de la
Culturas", however, like the
rest of the holidays this year,
it is being moved to the
following Monday.
Monday, October 16, will be the
"legal" holiday, where all
banks, government institutions
and most businesses will be
closed, offering Costa Ricans a
long weekend.
The Abel Pacheco administration
signed a decree last year
that moved all holidays falling
on a weekday to the following
Monday, save for the
Independence Day holiday on
September 15.
The current administration has
come under fire for the moving
of the July 25 holiday
celebrating the annexation of
Guanacaste and Mother's Day
which has been traditionally
celebrated on August 15.
President Arias promised "Guanacastecos"
to reinstate their holiday on
the day it falls, though no
mention was made of the other
holidays.
To be clear, in Costa Rica,
Christmas Day is still on
December 25 and New Year's Day
will be celebrated on January 1.
