Victims of Guatemalan
Conflict Demand Compensation
Relatives of the victims of
Guatemala's armed domestic
conflict, went to the Congress
of the Republic on Wednesday to
demand the speed-up of the
compensation promised by the
government in accordance with
the Peace Accords.
In almost two months it will be
a decade since the end of the
confrontation and there are
still thousands of relatives and
survivors who have received no
help from authorities, confirmed
local sources.
The National Victims Movement
also demanded extending for one
year the documentation period
for those affected by the
36-year conflict (1960-1996).
Appearing before Deputy Victor
Manuel Sales, group leaders
expressed their concern on the
possible use of the funds
assigned for the compensation.
Deputy Sales assured they will
call National Compensation
Program officials to investigate
why the project has come to a
halt and to guarantee the
transparency of the use of the
monies.
