Swing Vote Key in Nicaragua
Swaying voters is a number one
concern among the five parties
contending in the November 5
Presidential elections in
Nicaragua.
Analysts agree that the split of
majority parties Partido Liberal
Constitucionalista (PLC) and
Sandinista National Liberation
Front (FSLN) disrupts the over
16-year polarized scenario.
PLC splinter Alianza Liberal
Nicaraguense (ALN) and FSLN
sliver Movimiento Renovador
Sandinista (MRS) now divide "independentists"
that generally abstained.
Raul Obregon (M R Consultores)
said on the TV program Esta
Semana that the undecided,
around eight percent, will play
a key role Sunday.
He added that if ex President
Daniel Ortega (1984-1990) wins
over just two percent of these
voters he would secure a win in
the first round.
The Constitution demands a
minimum 35 percent margin plus
five percent lead on runner up
Eduardo Montealegre (ALN) whose
sole choice is to force a
runoff.
Montealegre along Jose Rizo
(PLC) and Edmundo Jarquín (MRS),
both tied in the third place,
under 20 percent in the latest
polls.
The only one without a chance is
Eden Pastora, from the
Evangelical organization
Alternativa por el Cambio, that
never exceeded one percent.
