Guatemalans Protest Financial
Scandal
Hundreds of Guatemalans with
foreign-currency deposits in the
closed Banco del Cafe and its
offshore company located in
Barbados convened a protest
Monday in front of installments
of the entity to demand their
money.
So far, no local financial
authority or executive of the
institution, closed since
October 20, have given
guarantees on the recovery of
their capital.
Several people are in the same
situation with funds in a firm
associated to the Bancafe,
denominated "Values and
Investments of the Country."
Guatemala Banking Superintendent
Willy Zapata attributed the
problem to savings and domestic
currency issues and said
"mandates start this week with
the governments of Barbados and
United States, where there are
allegedly deposits in hard
currency of the Bancafe
International Bank Company."
The funds from official
companies and institutions have
not been freed, nor credit and
debit cards, which are rejected
throughout the national
territory.
