Caja Ordered To Include
Viagra On List of
Essential Medications
The Sala Constitucional
(Constitutional court)
or Sala IV as it is also
referred to decided in
favour of a man
suffering from erictle
dysfunction in ordering
the Caja Costarricense
de Seguro Social (CCSS)
to provide him Viagra.
The man had been refused
the drug by the CCSS and
made an appeal to the
constitutional court.
The CCSS has been
ordered to include
Viagra on the list of
"essential medications".
The court orders the
Comité Central de
Farmacoterapia, and the
heads of the
Departamento de
Farmacoepidemiología and
the la División Médica
to provide the pills to
patients who meet the
medical requirement for
the medication.
Karen Vargas, of the
División Jurídica de la
CCSS (legal department),
said that her office
will ask the court to
clear up some doubts her
department has over the
ruling.
The CCSS said it will
not decide on the
distribution of the
pills until the legal
department has had its
answers.
