New San José - Caldera Highway Construction Stalled Again
If you are planning a trip from San José on the San José-Caldera highway - the new road connecting the Central Valley to the Pacific coast - better put aside your plans for a little while longer.

The Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE) has said it will continue to be a participant in the financing of the construction of the new highway but the start of construction will have to be postponed until at least April as the institution finalizes details of the project.

Following two decades of waiting, Costa Ricans will have to wait a little longer to be able to see the project to completion.

The new highway will cost some us$200 million dollars, of which the BCIE is picking up us$160 million and the balance coming from the Caja Madrin in Spain.

Alfredo Ortuño, BCIE president in Costa Rica, explained that the magnitude of the project required a new analysis for the financing. The next seven weeks will give the financial institution the time to calmly evaluate the advances in the project and the projections for its completion.

Come April the first crews will begin working on the San José (from the Gimnasio Naciona) to Ciudad Colón leg of the project, which should take up most of the next 24 months.

The project start was last year, as signs along the Parque La Sabana were erected to tell drivers of the pending work ahead. But, without explanations nothing happened.
