Costa Rica On Alert For Pig
Fever in Nicaragua
Costa Rican authorities
announced Tuesday on the
increased prevention measures in
place at the border control
point with Nicaragua due to an
outbreak of "pig fever" in that
country.
The director of the Servicio
Nacional de Salud Animal
(national animal health), Yayo
Vicente, explained in a press
conference that the controls are
on animal movement at the border
to avoid infecting animals in
Costa Rica.
Vicente said he spoke to his
counterpart in Nicaragua,
Roberto Dangla Lira, who said
that the outbreak in centred in
Granada and is being controlled
through vaccination, treatment
of the affected animals and
quarantene, among other
measures.
For the time being the border
controls will be maintained,
said Vicente, until a new
advisory is issued.
Costa Rican has an estimated pig
population of 500.000.
