Argentine federal court orders
arrest of former president
The federal court of Argentina
on Tuesday issued a second
arrest warrant for former
President Isabel Peron, who is
charged with involvement with a
right-wing paramilitary group's
human rights abuses during her
1974-1976 tenure.
Judge Norberto Oyarbide ordered
the arrest in a probe into
kidnappings and killings
committed by the Argentine
Anti-Communist Alliance, a
right-wing paramilitary group
linked to as many as 1,500
murders between 1973 and 1975.
Last Thursday, an Argentine
judge issued an international
arrest warrant for the
75-year-old former leader, who
has been living in Spain for 25
years, on charges of the murder
of a political activist during
her rule.
However, the Spanish National
Police released her on bail on
Friday, shortly after her
arrest.
Judge Juan del Olmo said that
there was little risk that the
old lady would flee the country,
but ordered her to come back to
court within 15 days or face
house arrest.
Isabel Peron, whose formal name
is Maria Estela Martinez de
Peron, became president in 1974
after the death of her husband,
Juan Domingo Peron, and was
ousted in 1976 in a military
coup.
