Madonna,
Shaquille and Rocky Are Ticos
We are not talking about those famous
personalities walking around the streets of
Costa Rica, but, rather of a break in tradition
for parents from naming their children from the
traditional José and María, which happen to be
two of the most common names in the country.
Anyone who has visited or lives in Costa Rica
will know at least one José or María.
According to the records of the Registro Civil
(civic registry), parents are sticking their
children with names like Kycward Aerd, Yurdguin
Starley, Bramwell and Janhudwip, all of which
are between 12 and 17 years of age.
Rodrigo Fallas, a senior official of the
Registro, said that the unusual names are due to
the influx of other cultures coming to Costa
Rica.
Fallas added that there is one person with the
registered name, Excel, the name of the well
known Microsoft spreadsheet program.
So, it is not unusual to run into Elvis Presley
living in Costa Rica, who happens to be a
resident of Coronado. Also in Costa Rica it is
not unusual to find Sylvester Stallone, Hitler
or Stalin.
Registered names include Richard Nixon, Jim
Morrison, and John Kennedy. In a twist to
include two famous names, some parents have
registered their children as Lennon McCartney
and Stalin Lenin.
