Mother's
Day To Go Back To Being Celebrated on August
15th
Its
almost official, Mother's Day moves back to
being celebrated on August 15th, following a
vote of approval by the legislators of the
Comisión de Asuntos Sociales.
However, it is now up to the Legislature if it
will support the commission's vote to amend
Article 48 of the Código de Trabajo (Labour
Code), which was amended by the former
legislature that moved Mother's Day and other
three holidays that when they fall during the
week are moved to the following Monday.
The push behind the proposal to celebrate
Mother's Day on the day it falls is May Antillón,
head of the legislative deputies of the ruling
party, Partico Liberación Nacional (PLN).
According to Antillón, bringing back Mother's
Day to being celebrated on August 15 guarantees
family integration and rescues Costa Rican
social values.
This year, August 15h fall on a Wednesday and if
the legislation is approved in time, Mother's
day will be celebrated on that day, as it is
deemed a national holiday. Last year, there was
total confusion on the celebration of Mother's
Day as it fell on a Tuesday and one, if not the
most, important holiday in the country had to be
celebrated the following Monday.
