Costa
Rica waits for Venezuela to designate another
ambassador
Four
months have elapsed since the Venezuelan
Government designated José Huerta as its envoy
to Costa Rica, but the Costa Rica has yet to
give its approval.
Costa Rican diplomatic sources said the Costa
Rican government expects Venezuela to drop
Huerta's designation and name another
ambassador.
"Diplomacy is a sign language, and an approval
taking longer than one month is deemed as a no,"
the source said.
Huerta's appointment ignited debate in Costa
Rica, as a former worker at the Venezuelan
Embassy in Paraguay - where Huerta held the
position of Ambassador- accused him of sexual
harassment.
However, former director of the Spanish daily
newspaper La Nación, Eduardo Urribarri, claims
that behind Costa Rica's refusal to okay
Huerta's designation there is another
politically sensible issue.
"Huerta is said to play a role in boosting the
likely presidential candidacy in Paraguay of
populist bishop Fernando Lugo, a potential ally"
of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
Further, Costa Rica planned to appoint Clara
Montero Mejía as Ambassador to Venezuela, but
the Venezuelan Executive Branch claimed she had
ties with the Venezuelan dissent.
