Venezuela Awakens to Energy Saving
With its
Energy Revolution, Venezuela sends a message
about saving the planet, assured Angel Prado,
coordinator of the program on the Cuban part.
"It is worthy to admire the position of a
country with one of the world s largest reserves
of oil, gas and water moving to implement a
policy to prevent waste," the Cuban technician
told Prensa Latina.
Venezuela is an example for a world that needs
to change its patterns of consumption, Prado
explained, after recalling the recent
substitution of more than 52 million light bulbs
for the saving variety in the residential sector
of the country.
The program counted on the efforts of 1,600
Cuban social workers and 1,500 young Venezuelan
activists who made the change in 130 days by
visiting 5.8 million homes.
This represented a significant reduction in
consumption of 138 kilowatts hour monthly for
each Venezuelan home that, in currency, can be
calculated at 9,500 bolivares, about 4.40
dollars on average from the electricity bill of
each house.
Prado considered that more important than the
positive economic effect was the ecological
awareness of the Venezuelan population during
its implementation.
