5.1% Pay Hike Approved For Private Sector Workers
Unionized private sector workers will receive a 5.1% pay hike for the second half of 2007, after an agreement was reached by business and union representatives.

The increase will affect 1.6 million workers of private business, according to the Consejo Nacional de Salarios (National Salary Council).

What the salary increase means in real numbers is that an employee earning ˘200.000 colones (us$387.60) per month will see an increase of ˘10.200 colones (us$19.76).

The workers unions had asked for a 7.1% increase while business had offered 4.91%.

An agreement was reached during the week and the announcement was made yesterday.

An announcement of public sector employees is expected during the coming week.

Government workers and unionized private sector employees are accustomed to the twice yearly pay hikes, the first taking effect on January 1 of the year and the second on July 1.

The salary hike applies only to unionized private sector workers. However, non-unionized businesses use the increase as guideline to offer raises to their employees.
