Mudslide in Cartago Claims Three Lives
The rainy season is not only rain and more rain,
but also of floods and mudslides. Yesterday, a
little girl and two women were buried alive by a
mudslide that swept away the vehicle their were
riding in, in Tierra Blanca, Cartago.
The mountain side just came down on them,
sweeping away the vehicle and its passengers, 19
year old Hannia Guiselle Quirós Núñez and her
one year old daughter, Kristel and María Robles
Abarca, 57 years old.
Officials say that the young mother and her
child were buried alive as the vehicle filled
with mud while Anna Maria was swept away by the
mud and water almost a kilometre from the scene,
being bounced around the weeds and rocks along
the way.
The only survivor of the mudslide is 57 year old
Jorge Vega Calderón, the driver of the Toyota
Corolla, who is calling it a miracle, as rescue
workers heroically pulled the man from the
vehicle, using hydraulic equipment to tear away
the metal.
Unfortunately, rescue workers could do nothing
for the young mother and her child. As Cruz Roja
(Red Cross) workers pulled the young child from
the mud, she was still alive, dieing in their
arms moments later as her young heart gave out.
The older couple were friends of the young girl
and child, all living in the area at the back of
the Basilica de La Virgen de Los Angeles.
