Calls Salvadorians to March against Poverty
The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front
called Salvadorians on Thursday to march against
poverty, which affects more than 60 percent of
the people, on June 1.
"With the demonstration we plan to protest
against the neoliberal economic policy
implemented by Salvadorian President Antonio
Saca, who is fostering the privatization of
public services," FMLN Joint Coordinator Luz
Estrella Rodriguez told a press conference.
She recalled that on June 1, the president will
report on his government's achievements over the
past three years and the new measures in the
social and energy sectors.
Regarding the demonstration, the FMLN
spokeswoman said that the president had warned
that "if there is any problem, the National
Civil Police will act as appropriate."
Rodriguez, who is the mayor of Apopa, one of the
most important cities in El Salvador, pointed
out that this kind of threat does not intimidate
social groups and party followers.
Saca's report has raised expectation among
politicians, analysts and the people, due to the
deterioration of living standards, insecurity as
a result of crime and the lack of options to
study and work, Rodriguez said.
