Traders Knock Bans on Cuba
US business representatives at a session Tuesday
in Havana censured Washington´s trade
restrictions on Cuba.
Between representatives from Cuba s Alimport
marketing company and 265 US businesspeople, the
encounter is expected to generate agreements of
at 100 million dollars.
William Hawke, head of the Mississippi
delegation, expressed his wish that US President
George W. Bush lift the blockade of Cuba and
allows trade and travel.
"In the end, anti-Cuba sanctions affect us,"
said Mervin Det Mer, president of the US Rice
Growers Federation, adding that when these sales
began, they wrongly thought things would
gradually relax.
In the meantime, Florida representative John
Yohaman noted he freely trades with China and
other countries, but cannot with Cuba, a
neighbor country.
Referring to obstacles, Kirbi Jones, president
of the Cuba-US Trade Association, said that in
2001 the US Congress allowed for US sales to
Cuba, but in reality, difficulties have emerged
and banks were told not to do business with the
Island.
