Panama to Doctors: Accept Salary Solutions
Panaman'sPresident Martin Torrijos demanded doctors on strike for 16 days to accept salary solutions, in a surprise appearance on TV in which he promised to use all his power to confront the crisis.

More than 5,000 doctors and odontologists workers of hospitals belonging to the Ministry of Health MINSA and the Box of Social Security CSS initiated a strike on November 6, in demand of 60 percent wage increases.

Likewise, in the course of negotiations, physicians requested a written commitment by the government of not privatizing the health system, including the abolition of a law that allows hiring individuals of medical services paid with public funds.

Torrijos said he is willing to take the necessary measures to avoid that medical strike from causing a public health crisis.

He added he does not rule out absolutely nothing, but he considered unacceptable for the economy of the country the wage increase in a 60 percent.

The President denied that privatization figures in the agenda of his government.
