Nicaraguan Court

Years For Raping,
Impregnating 9 Year Old
Stepdaughter

MANAGUA, Nicaragua: A
man convicted of raping
and impregnating his
9-year-old stepdaughter
has been sentenced to 30
years in prison.
The case received
international attention
after a women's group
helped the child get an
abortion in Nicaragua,
outraging the Roman
Catholic Church.
The girl was raped in
Costa Rica, where she
lived with her
stepfather and mother.
She and her family
initially blamed a Costa
Rican man, but she later
backed off that story
and said the stepfather
was responsible.
Judge Ruth Chamorro
sentenced the man late
Tuesday and said his
30-year sentence cannot
be appealed.
Prosecutors had sought a
40-year sentence,
arguing that the suspect
continued to rape his
stepdaughter once they
returned to Nicaragua,
impregnating her again.
The girl, now 14, gave
birth to a child a year
ago. |
