Diario Extra Preferred Newspaper
According to a poll by the Estructuras de Opinión Pública de la Escuela de Matemática de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), the number one newspaper preferred by Costa Ricans is the Diario Extra.

The nationwide poll revealed that 29.9% interviewed preferred the Extra for their information, with the La Nación a close second at 29.8%. The Al Día (a publication by the Grupo Nacion) was preferred by 12.8%.

19.25% of the interviewed told the poll takers that they did not read newspapers, according to Jorge Poltronieri, coordinator of the UCR poll.

"The Extra has been creeping up while the Nación has been sliding in the last year", said Poltronieri.

The UCR poll also asked preference of television news, placing Telenoticias (channel 7) in first place at 28.4%, followed by Repretel's channel 6 at 25.5%.

The interviewers did not ask the reasons for the Extra's popularity, as it daily publishes graphic photos of traffic accidents and of scantily clad women.
