5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Venezuela
CARACAS - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on Richter scale struck eastern Venezuela on early Monday morning. No casualties have been reported.

The Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Investigations said the quake took place at 2:49 local time (0749 GMT). The epicenter was in the Caribbean sea, about 305 km east of Caracas.

According to Interior Minister Ramon Rodriguez, some 50 buildings were slightly damaged and a hospital was evacuated after the quake.

The tremor also caused a cutoff of electricity supply in some areas of Cumana, the capital city of the coastal state of Sucre. Police officers have been deployed across the state, although there have been no reports of casualties so far.

The quake was felt also in the states of Nueva Esparta and Anzoategui.
