US Warship off Nicaragua
MANAGUA - President of
Nicaragua Daniel Ortega
stated that members of
the 4th US Navy Fleet
are spying on Nicaragua,
protected by the facade
of humanitarian work.
President Ortega's
denunciation was made on
Monday during the 28th
anniversary of the
Nicaraguan Naval Force
when the USS Kearsarge
multipurpose wasp-class
amphibious assault
warship arrived at the
country.
Nicaraguan sources told
Prensa Latina that if
Washington wants to send
medical missions to
Nicaragua they should
use hospital ships
instead of a 225
meter-long ship of the
4th Fleet.
It is not the first time
this ship is moved to
Latin American countries
under the same pretext.
It is qualified as a
Light Helo Deck 3 with
light attack and rescue
helicopters' landing
strip.
It was designed to carry
and receive
air-cushioned landing
crafts used to move
troops through the
coast, Harrier II
helicopters, and
vertical takeoff and
landing planes.
The military unit has
its base in Norfolk,
Virginia, and will be
off the Atlantic coast
of Nicaragua for 12 days
carrying 500 people on
board.
The USS Kearsarge will
remain in Latin America
for four months and will
land in five nations of
Central and South
America and the
Caribbean after landing
in Nicaragua.
Panama, Colombia,
Dominican Republic,
Guyana, and Trinidad and
Tobago are the other
nations that will soon
feel intimidated by the
warship before it
returns to its base in
Virginia.
