Judges Considering
Strike
The difference between
lower court judges and
magistrates of the Corte
Suprema de Justicia
(Supreme Court) is
ending up in a strike by
judges who are upset
over the fat raise the
Supreme Court justices
gave voted themselves.
The lower court judges
are also upset for the
magistrates decision to
refuse to open an
investigation into the
case of alternate
magistrate, Federico
Soto, who received
consulting fees from the
government.
The decision to strike
will be made public by
Abel Jiménez, president
of the Asociación
Costarricense de la
Judicatura (Acojud)
within 48 hours.
Affected by the strike
will the courts of
Tránsito, Familia,
Agrario, Trabajo, Penal,
Juvenil and Contencioso.
The lower court judges
are upset because the
magistrates gave
themselves a raise
amounting to ¢430
million colones,
enfuriating the lower
court judges who met
Wednesday to determine a
course of action.
Jiménez said that a
decision will be made
today or tomorrow on
what pressure to put to
the magistrates, adding
that there the judges
will not back down on
the a possible strike,
an action that would be
historic in Latin
America, as there never
has been a strike of
court judges.
"We have come to an
agreement to take
drastic action that has
never been seen before,
which will make history.
Details of the action
will be make public in
the coming days", said
Jiménez. |
