Colombia, Strikers Talk
with President
BOGOTA - Truck drivers
are discussing with
President Alvaro Uribe
on Friday a way out of
general strike after two
failed rounds of talks
in which several
senators acted as
intermediary.
The strike promoted by
the ACC (Colombia Truck
Drivers Association)
began 16 days ago and it
has caused great
economic damage so far.
Uribe said the
government cannot make
more concessions but the
executive should amend
any mistake made.
The meeting held in the
presidential seat and
attended by Minister of
Transport Andres Gallego
might prove crucial to
reach an agreement on
the labor conflict.
The government reported
foreign trade losses are
higher than $1 billion a
day due to limitations
in goods import and
export.
To mitigate the effects
of the strike more than
5,000 police officers
and the army escorted
truck caravans through
the main roads of the
country.
Truck drivers are
requesting companies to
comply with the law of
freightage because they
are paying less and
taking advantage of the
strong competition. |
