Guevara Announces His
Presidential Candidacy
The president of the
Partido Movimiento
Libertario (ML), Otto
Guevara, wants to be
president. Again. But
will seek re-election
for legislators as well,
just in case.
Guevara, over the
weekend, announced his
candidacy for the 2010
presidential elections,
but will stick with his
legislator's role if he
does not win.
Guevara came in third
place, behind Ottón
Solís and Oscar Arías,
obtaining 8.48% of the
vote or 137.710 votes in
his favour.
Guevara said he tossed
his hat in the ring for
2010 in an effort to
promote his plans for
the country from the
presidential chair or
from the legislative
bench.
"I am going in from both
sides, as I have a
commitment to the
country", said Guevara.
Although Ottón Solís is
expected to lead the
Partido Acción Cuidadana
(PAC) he has yet to make
a formal announcement.
At the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN),
former ministro de
Seguridad Pública,
Fernando Berrocal, and
San José's mayor, Johnny
Araya, have already
announced their
intentions to seek the
party's nomination,
although it is expected
that Costa Rica's vice
president, Laura
Chinchilla, is a shoe
in.
No one has made public
their intention to lead
the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC),
a party that fell hard
in the results in the
last election after two
former PUSC presidents -
Rafael Angél Calderón
(1990-1994) and Miguel
Angél Rodríguez
(1998-2002) - were
indicted for corruption.
Guevara, during his
announcement, said that
if he is elected his
decision would be made
with transparency and
would face Costa Ricans
and the media, governing
in a manner that would
everyone feel proud and
ensure that the streets
would be the safest and
cleanest in Latin
America. |
