Elections Tribunal
Reproaches President
Arias
The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) -
elections tribunal -
scolded Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias,
for his public comment
last April of his wishes
for a woman to follow
his legacy in 2010, in
support of
vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla.
The TSE magistrates
reproached the president
in a resolution adopted
by the court on Monday,
for the president's
beligerent comments made
four months back.
The accusation before
the Tribunal was made by
legislators Elizabeth
Fonseca and Rafael Elías
Madrigal.
Luis Antonio Sobrado,
president of the TSE,
explained that Arias was
close to violating
constitutional
principles of remaining
impartial while in
public office.
"To put it mildly, the
president crossed the
lien of political
beligerence. While his
statements expressing a
desire related to the
election of the next
president, there is no
criminality of the
conduct, insofar as
there is no outright
support mentioning
names. But the President
stepped dangerous
ground, " said Sobrado.
Sobrado was clear that
the message was not
directed at Chinchilla
as she still has to make
her decision public to
run or not for the
Partido Liberación
Nacional (PLN)
nomination.
The TSE president added
that he hopes that all
those in government will
comply with the
constitutional
requirements of
remaining political
impartial and neutral.
