Banco Nacional To Shut
Down ATM's At Night
Starting on Friday,
December 5, the
automated tellers
(ATM'S) of the Banco
Nacional de Costa Rica (BNCR)
will take a break from
10pm to 5am, as the
banks steps up security
of its customers.
The bank, in a statement
to the press, said that
all its 396 automated
tellers machines at all
branch locations and
including kiosks in
malls will shut down for
the night.
The Director de
Estrategia Comercial del
Banco Nacional, Manrique
Chacón, explained that
the increase of attacks
on ATM customers has
forced the bank to adopt
the measure and he hopes
that other banks and
financial institutions
will do the same.
The nightly shut down,
according to the bank,
will decrease and
hopefully avoid cases of
"paseos millonarios"
(millionaire rides),
where criminals take
their victims hostage
and tour a number of
teller machines to draw
out as cash as possible.
"We ask customers to
organize their schedule
to make cash withdrawls
during the day, at a
time where their
personal security is not
at risk", said Chacón.
"There is no reason a
person should be at a
teller machine at 2am",
added the bank
spokesperson.
