First Adult Heart-Lung Transplant Patient Dies
Mairen Álvarez Chavarría, the first person in Costa Rican to undergo heart and lung transplant died Sunday night. She was 21 years of age. Doctors said Alvarez died from septic shock from a several bacterial infection.

Originating from Santa Cruz de Guanacaste, Mairen underwent a heart and lung surgery last January 18 at the Hospital Calderón Guardia, the first adult to undergo such a surgery in Costa Rica.

Luis Paulino Hernández, the hospitals medical director, announced Mairen's death yesterday afternoon.

Hernández said that Mairen's condition had been improving before begging to deteriorate last Friday and was put on antibiotics.

Hernández said that the surgery was a full success and her body did not present any organ rejection Mairen was breathing and eating on her own and was expected to fully recover.

Hernández said that the hospital will continue with its transplant program, adding that the woman from Limón who underwent heart transplant surgery last year is doing well.
