Colombia, Brazil Enter
Into Agreement On Joint
Border Defense
Colombia and Brazil
entered into an
agreement in Bogota on
Saturday that is
intended to help both
countries improve border
defense between them.
Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe announced
the agreement during a
visit by Brazilian
President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva in his
country.
The agreement paves the
way for bilateral
cooperation in military
training, intelligence
gathering and weapons
procurement.
Uribe said Colombia has
agreed to join the
agreement after
receiving assurances
that the country's
rebels fighting a
44-year-old insurgency
will not be permitted to
join it. Other countries
in the region are
expected to participate
in the agreement in the
future.
"Given this
understanding, Colombia
has decided to join the
agreement," said Uribe.
