New Tougher Vehicular Inspection Manual To Be Ready In September, In Force By January 2009
Without a question pubic transport vehicles, like taxis, cannot have polarized windows. That is one just a number of the changes to the manual for the annual vehicular inspection being prepared and to go into effect in January 2009.

The manual is expected to be approved by Transport officials by September allowing owners of vehicles to make the necessary modifications to their vehicles.

Viviana Martín, vice-ministra de Transportes, said that her department is looking to modify the regulations for restriction controls in vehicular revision, especially in the areas of mechanical and safety and responding to the technological changes of newer vehicles.

"Taxi will not be permitted to have any type of obstruction of windows, like polarized glass, to ensure citizen safety", said Martín.

The vice-minister added that similar regulations, only on a graduated scale, will be applied to private vehicles. Already, although the annual inspection allows polarization of rear windows, calling them "leve" or light infraction, Tránsito (traffic) officials are fining vehicles.

Other changes that are expected to make it part of the revised manual is the condition of the horn, the thickness of the tire threads, including using tire wider than recommended by the manufacturer and handicap ramps for buses, all items that currently leve which will pass to "grave" or serious and meaning a failed inspection.

Martín said that many of the changes are coming directly from vehicle owners, traffic police and a commission in charge of reviewing the current manual and input from the transportation industry.
