Former Seguridad Minister Wants To Be President
Former ministro de Seguridad Pública, Fernando Berrocal, yesterday confirmed that he will be seeking the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) for the 2010 presidential elections.

Berrocal left the Seguridad post some three months over the controversy of statements he made to the press about Colombian rebel ties to Costa Rican politicians. Berrocal said he did not quit, nor was fired by president Oscar Arias, he simply left after a difference of opinion.

Berrocal said that he has a drawn his campaign for the presidential nomination that will focus on criticism of the current social and democratic situation and offer an alternative come time for the election.

Although she has not yet thrown her hat in the ring, vice president, Laura chinchilla, is expected to make her bid for the presidential chair and is seen as a shoe in for the party's nomination.

"I am announcing the 'democratic insurrection' of the inside of the party, which are against the orthodox "arismo" and pointing by Casa Presidencial of designating Lauta Chinchilla as a success to Oscar Arias", said Berrocal.

Berrocal said that he was recently in Spain where met and conversed with former Costa Rican president, José María Figueres Olsen, about the internal situation of the PLN party.

The former Arias aide said they both agreed that Costa Rica need to have a clear social democratic development plan in the face of the coming opening of its markets.

Berrocal said that three months after leaving the government nothing has changed, that the government lacks vision facing the problems of high gasoline prices and insecurity of the country has gotten worse. Berrocal was quick to note that no important drug busts have been made since his departure from Seguridad, like as if drug traffickers just picked up and left the country after he left his post.

However, that is not the case, Berrocal assures, adding that situation is causing for more pessimism with the population and that is dangerous for the country.
