Crime Hotline Proving A Success

Crime Hotline Proving A Success
The free OIJ hotline is being called a success after the first week of operation, as police investigators have now 271 new cases.

The confidential hotline 800 8000 OIJ (800 8000 645) is being used by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial to receive anonymous tips on crimes. The Centro de Información Confidencial (CICO) is currently handing some 39 calls daily.

Officials say that 80% of the calls are related to drugs, while the remaining are calls for auto thefts, assaults and other crimes.

The hotline is set up to take calls from any part of the country.

Jorge Rojas, director of the OIJ, said he is pleased with the response of the citizen.

The hotline allows callers to report crimes without having to visit a nearby OIJ office, which could be time consuming and in remote areas almost an impossibility.

Rojas added that the hotline is a pilot program and if successful will be expanded with more personnel. For the time being the hotline operates only during business hours, but is hoped to be expanded soon to operate on a 24 hour basis.
