Government Announces
Plan To Give ¢50.000
Monthly To Poor Families
The Costa Rican
government said it is
committed to helping the
poor and yesterday
announced a plan to give
¢50.000 colones a month
to 16.000 women who are
heads of the family who
live in extreme poverty
and have children under
the age 12.
The first payments
should start in about
four weeks, said the
ministro de la
Presidencia, Rodrigo
Arias, along with the
ministros de agricultura
and Hacienda, Javier
Flores and Guillermo
Zúñiga, respectively.
The payment is part of
the Plan Nacional de
Alimentos, (National
Food Plan).
The 16.000 women will be
chosen from records of
the Instituto Mixto de
Ayuda Social (IMAS) as
part of the government's
plan to allow those
families with limited
economic resources to be
able to rice, beans and
corn, in the face of a
food crisis.
The government also
announced plans to for
more funding of
scholarships and
strengthen the Cen-Cinai,
the government run
organization that
focuses on nutrition and
development in
low-income communities
