Regulator Confirms Bad
Cellular Service In the
Zona Sur
For many living in the
Zona Sur (Southern Zone)
it didn't take a study
by the Autoridad
Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
to tell them that they
had lousy cellular
telephone coverage.
The Aresep - regulator
of public prices and
services - said, based
on its study of cellular
service between San José
and Cuidad Neily that
had been ongoing between
October 2006 and March
2008, that it was
impossible to maintain a
continuous conversation,
no matter with of the
three cellular networks
customers were connected
to.
The Aresp said that the
GSM connection was the
worst were conversations
were limited to short
periods and near major
centres.
The Aresep noted that
the Alcatel GSM network
was worse than the
Ericsson GSM and that
percentage of completed
calls was low.
The regulator, however,
noted an improvement in
the Ericsson and Licent
TDMA networks, mainly
due to the lower number
of customers and users
connected at any time.
Currently there are more
than 1 million GSM
customers of the two
networks, in comparison
to less than 500.000 of
the TDMA.
Given the findings, the
regulador general,
Fernando Herrero, has as
the Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) - the
state monopoly on
telecommunications - to
explain. |
