Panama: Resolution in
Favor of the Five
Panama - National
College of Lawyers of
Panama officially
announced a resolution
in favor of carrying out
a fairer, faster and
clearer trial for the
antiterrorist Cuban five
imprisoned in US 10
years ago, its President
Martha Lopez reported
Saturday.
The resolution of
solidarity with the
Cuban fighters has
already been issued, she
said, in which
Washington authorities
are urged to act in
accordance with a fair
process.
In statements to Prensa
Latina, the also legal
Consultant of the
Commission of Foreign
Relations of the
National Assembly
indicated that official
announcement ratifies
the position of National
College of Lawyers of
Panama regarding the
case.
The resolution of the
institution, member of
the International
Federation of Latin
American Lawyers, states
that the antiterrorist
Cuban Five received
sentences
disproportionate.
The sentences emitted
were in total four life
imprisonments plus 75
years, affirming
regarding this that no
human being could
fulfill them.
Panama Foreign Affairs
Committee of the
National Assembly
condemned the long
process against Antonio
Guerrero, Gerardo
Hernandez, Ramon
Labañino, Fernando
Gonzalez and Rene
Gonzalez, unjustly
imprisoned.
That legislative
authority emitted a
resolution that ratified
the endorsement to a
fairer trial and
condemned the attack
against the guarantees
of the Cuban fighters
reflected in the case.
Ecumenical Committee of
Panama (a fraternal
association of churches
which confess Jesus
Christ as God and
Saviour) and the Latin
American Council of
Churches (an
organization composed of
Christian churches and
movements) also
expressed in favor in
support to the cause of
the antiterrorist Cuban
Five.
