Impact of US Financial
Crisis
Honduras hosts today a
meeting of Central
American Integration
System (SICA) presidents
to analyze possible
alternatives to counter
the impact of the US
financial crisis.
During the meeting,
presidents will also
evaluate development of
the customs union
process in the region
and advances in
negotiations of an
association agreement
with the European Union
(Economic Partnership
Agreement).
Honduran president
Manuel Zelaya –
pro-tempore chairman of
SICA - expects the forum
can reach basic accords
as to how the region
will be in the near
future, assured
Communications Minister,
Eduardo Reina.
At the meeting,
participants will know
about the results of an
analysis of the US
economy, prepared by
specialists of the
Central American Bank of
Economic Integration,
the Secretariat of
Central American
Economic Integration and
the SICA.
They will also assess
the effects of world
financial crisis, the
advances in agricultural
integration, regional
security and other
economic and social
issues relevant to the
region.
The agenda was prepared
the eve by foreign
ministers of the eight
countries to be
represented at the
meeting by their
presidents: Guatemala,
El Salvador, Nicaragua,
Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic and Honduras.
This meeting will not be
attended by the
president of Panama,
Martin Torrijos nor by
Belize Prime Minister,
Dean Barrow.
The SICA summit takes
place in a context
marked by the worst
crisis suffered by the
US economy in decades,
whose sequels can affect
in particular its
trading partners, as the
signatories of the
Central American Free
Trade Agreement (CAFTA). |
