Burgos Hangs Himself
While Behind Bars
Luis Fernando Burgos,
the former public
defender sentenced to 35
years prison for killing
his wife, Maureen
Hidalgo, hung himself in
his La Reforma prison
cell yesterday morning.
Burgos, following the
appearance of Maureen's
body in July 2006 and
throughout his trial,
maintained his
innocence. At the
conclusion of the trial
in September 2007,
Burgos was found guilty
and sentenced to 35
years behind bars,
although it wasn't until
three weeks ago that the
Sala III confirmed the
sentences once all the
appeals were exhausted.
Burgos would have been
released from prison in
2041.
According to Jorge
Rojas, Burgos' lawyer,
his client was very
depressed over the last
couple of weeks and was
under special watch by
prison officials.
