Inmate Ran Prison Drug
Ring
One the major drug
dealers inside the La
Reforma prison was found
with ¢250.000 colones in
cash and a large
quantity of marijuana
during a check of his
cell by prison
officials.
Prison authorities were
doing a routine
inspection of all cells,
looking for contraband
cellular phones which
are often used by
inmates to run scams
outside the prison.
Accompanied by officials
of the Fuerza Pública
(police), officials of
he Adaptación Social
were surprised at the
find.
The question is being
asked is can an inmate
come into possession of
such a large quantity of
drugs and cash?
Officials can only
respond by saying that
the majority is smuggled
in by female visitors,
hiding the cash and
drugs in intimate parts
of their bodies during
visiting days.
However, nothing is of
surprise at the La
Reforma, a prison that
holds many of the
country's best
criminals.
Just a few ago, prison
authorities, with the
help of the Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ),
broke up an extortion
ring involving inmates
making calls from within
the prison and with the
help of associates on
the outside, extorting
money from their
victims.
The cellular phone was
the primary took by
inmates running the
extortion ring
notwithstanding the
investment of some ¢8
million colones by
prison officials to
install a cell signal
blocking device. It
appears that the device
only blocks signals on
the GSM band and not the
TDMA band.
This year more than 20
complaints have been
registered by victims of
extortion and fraud
perpetrated by inmates
of La Reforma with a
population of 2.200. |
