Central America and
Europe Cannot Agree On
Banana Tariffs
The free trade
negotiations between the
European Union and
Central America bore no
fruit on Friday amid
continuous disagreements
on both sides regarding
tariffs on items like
coffee, sugar and
banana.
The Central American
countries want to see a
reduction in the rates
for bananas that have
been laid down for
favoring European
ex-colonies, but
negotiators in Guatemala
told reporters that
little progress was made
in the talks, which have
been extended by several
more days.
The European Union
negotiator, Rupert
Schelgelmilch, said
during the talks that
the discussion about the
products "will be
possible once we have a
reasonable bid the
Central Americans. "
A new round of
negotiations will take
place in December in
Brussels.
