Limón Tense As
Protestors Set Fire To
Banana Truck
The situation in Limón
can only be describe as
tense. Following the
firing and a strike by
workers of the cardboard
factory Envaco, the
situation in the port
town has become grave,
when strikers set fire
to a tractor trailer
carrying a load of
bananas.
The truck was set on
fire on Saturday night
route 32 (San José -
Limón) highway, in front
of the Bandeco container
depot.
Those responsible for
setting the fire fled
the scene minutes before
members of the Unidad
Especial de Apoyo (UEVA)
- swat team - arrived,
according to Rodrigo
Araya, regional director
of the Fuerza Pública
(police).
The fire and protest
blocked the highway for
more than three hours as
buses, automobiles and
trucks lined up in both
directions while
emergency crews put out
the fire and judicial
officials collected
evidence.
Police fear that more
areas may be subject of
continued violence in
the province, as workers
and former workers
pressure the company and
block the loading and
unloading of ships at
the Moín port.
The disturbances have
also affected the entry
and exit of the Dole
company and on Sunday
morning officials of the
Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) had a
confrontation with area
taxi and "piratas"
(informal taxis), who
are apparently
supporting the protest. |
