UNASUR for Regional
Defense Council
COCHABAMBA - Legislators
from the Union of South
American Nations (UNASUR)
are to define Friday in
this city the date for
the creation of the
South American Defense
Council (CDS), official
sources reported.
According to Bolivian
Defense Minister Walker
San Miguel, that
initiative outlined by
Brazil is aimed at
fostering mutual
confidence and joint
actions against threats
gripping the region.
"The Government of
Bolivia encourages the
creation of the Council
to also establish a
consultation mechanism
for natural disasters
and other threats," San
Miguel stated.
The next summit of
UNASUR heads of State
and presidents will most
probably include the
resurgence of the CDS to
face illegalities, he
noted.
San Miguel said that the
Executive encouraged the
creation of that new
entity of cooperation.
The aim of the CSD, he
stated, is to coordinate
among regional ministers
actions to face natural
disasters, humanitarian
assistance, peacekeeping
missions, professional
exchange and fighting
all threats, above all,
illegal activities like
drug trafficking and
smuggling. |
