International Red Cross Calls to Aid Central America
PANAMA = The Internacional Red Cross is seeking a us$1 million fund to support emergency operations in Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, which have been affected by heavy rains, sources of that entity reported on Friday.

A press release published today said those funds, requested in a preliminary call, would cover buys and distribution of food, and hygiene items, and kitchen utensils for 6,000 families.

Experts in disaster management of that institution said they would proceed to review the call, once new results of the assessments in the nations affected by rains and floods.

At that pace, they are trying to respond to the mid-term needs and help people survive until they can return to their homes and start with their lives again.

For several weeks, tropical depressions and storms caused hard rains in the whole region, and the worst damage was to Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Around 215,000 people in these three countries lost their houses, belongings, crops, and means of survival, due to floods and building collapses.
