Guatemala Identifies
Kidnapping Gangs
GUATEMALA - At
least 12 kidnapping
gangs operate in
Guatemala and have
committed 46 abductions
so far this year,
according to data from
the Police Criminal
Investigation
Department, published
here Monday.
The most affected areas
are the Southern coast,
the western part of the
country and Guatemala
department.
The attorney against the
organized crime Juan
Carlos Quiñones
explained to Prensa
Latina that the number
of criminal groups was
determined because of
the different patterns
used to kidnap,
negotiate the ransom and
return of the victim.
Although many gangs
share similarities there
are two which are the
bloodiest because they
mutilate the people to
put pressure on their
families to obtain the
ransom.
The authorities reported
an increase of
kidnapping during the
last month with 27 cases
of kidnap denounced only
in August. |
