Interamericana Sur
Closed Again Due To
Landslide
A mudslide is once again
the cause of a closure
of the Interamericana
Sur, as the highway was
completed closed off at
kilometre 102, in the
area of Veulta de las
Monjas, near Pérez
Zeledón.
The closure was
confirmed by Germán
Marín, director of the
Policía de Tránsito,
following the landslide
that occurred shortly
after 4pm Saturday.
Marín said that a number
of vehicles were stuck
in the area of the
collapse, however, were
freed after machinery
was dispatched to the
area to begin the clean
up. Fortunately no one
was hurt.
The Consejo Nacional de
Vialidad (Conavi) has
been working feverishly
to get the roadway
cleaned up and is
hopeful that it will
re-open passage by late
this afternoon (Sunday).
The Interamericana Sur
is the only one of two
routes that links San
José to the Zona Sur
(Southern Zone), the
other being the
Costanera Sur from
Quepos.
The Vuelta de las Monjas
is known as one of the
ten most dangerous
curves in the country.
It is a very tight
section of roadway that
is in the form of an
"s". The curve has been
responsible for numerous
fatal accidents.
The same area was closed
off for days last April
when the tropical storm
Alma affected the area.
Yesterday's landslide is
an indirect result of
tropical storm Hanna
that has also affected
many areas of the
Pacific coast,
especially Guanacaste,
where more than a dozen
rivers have overflowed
their banks, causing
flooding in the areas of
Filadelfia and Liberia.
