24 Immigration Officials
Charged For False
Passport Stamps
The Dirección General de
Migración y Extranjería
- immigration service -
is getting tough on its
own, as it filed charges
against 24 officials for
fraud with entry/exit
stamps.
The charges were filed
with the Fiscalía
following an
investigation that
revealed that
immigration officials
were charging between
us$150 and us$300 to
Costa Ricans for an
entry/exit stamp on
their passports to fool
US officials into
believing that they had
returned to Costa Rica
following six months in
the US.
The charges filed were
confirmed by the
director de Migración,
Mario Zamora, after
several months of
investigations in Costa
Rica and the in the US.
Director Zamora said
that the majority of the
officials charged worked
at the San José
international airport.
Zamora added that their
investigation included
reports of several Costa
Ricans deported from the
US who told officials of
their stamp purchases.
The investigation also
included a report by US
Embassy official in
Costa Rica.
The investigation also
revealed that several of
the Costa Rican
immigration officials
travelled to the US for
the sole purpose of
apply stamps on Tico
passports.
