Remittances Decelerate
The money that Costa
Ricans working abroad
send to their families
has been increasing at a
lower pace in recent
times.
In the year to June
2008, the remittances
amounted to us$589
million, 14 percent more
than in the similar
period to June 2007.
The increase recorded to
2007’s first quarter had
been 18 percent and 22
percent in the last
quarter last year.
The deceleration started
after 2005’s last
quarter, when
remittances had
increased by 32 percent.
In spite of the slower
growth, remittances mean
one fourth of the
foreign investment in
Costa Rica and double
the amount sent abroad
by foreigners working
here. |
