Fernández Concert Cancelled For Lack of
Permits
Some 18.000 ticket holders to see Mexican
singer Vicente Fernández have to wait a
little longer as Saturday night's
presentation at the Saprissa stadium was
cancelled when the producer failed to obtain
the required permits from the municipalidad
de Tibás.
The interim mayor of Tibás, Federico de
Faría, refused to issue the permits to
28Producciones, the promoter of the Vicente
concert, notwithstanding phone calls,
including those of former San Jose mayor,
Johnny Araya, to pressure the issuance of
the permits.
Faría said the calls were respectful but
with pressure to allow the concert to take
place.
"I don't know if Johnny (Araya) is a fan of
Vicente, but, apart from his calls, I also
got calls from Casa Presidencial", said
Faría.
Notwithstanding the pressure, the interim
mayor refused to issue the permits, saying
that the producer filed the necessary
paperwork late. Faría added that municipal
officials has been anxiously waiting on the
paperwork on Friday, but it came too late
for the municipality to act.
A statement from Araya confirmed that he
called on Faría but at not time did he exert
any pressure. Araya said the call made on
the bequest of Vivian Quesada, a
presidential advisor, who had asked him for
a favour. "I was happy oblige and surprised
that Jorge Salas (mayor) was not available,
they gave me his cell phone number and I
called him to ask where the matter was",
said Araya.
The concert had been announced and promoted
since last month, with plenty of time for
the promoters to obtain the permits.
There is no word if Vicente Fernandez will
be making a make up appearance.
