Tránsito
Targets Bus Drivers and Operators For A Safe
Semana Santa
Using undercover officers and unannounced
visits at bus terminals and depots of the
bus operators, the Policía de Tránsito, is
waging its war on drunk bus drivers.
Bus terminals like the "coca cola", where
buses leave for the Pacific beaches and the
Caribeños, serving all routes to the
province of Limón, like the port city of
Limón, Guapiles, Siquirres and Puerto Viejo,
are all part of the spot checks by Tránsito
officials armed with breathalyzer units.
The director of the Policía de Tránsito,
German Marin, said that a number of his
officials will also be boarding buses in
civilian clothing and observe the conduct of
the driver, not only for alcohol abuse, but
also for other traffic infractions like
talking on a cellular phone while driving.
The objective of the operation is to reduce
traffic accidents and fatalities during the
holidays.
The ministra de Obras Públicas y Transportes,
Karla Gonzalez, added that the public can
help in this effort by calling 911 or
800-TRANSITO (800 8726 7486) and reporting
dangerous practices by bus drivers, like
overcrowding of buses and inappropriate
driver conduct, like being abuses to
passengers.
The ministra is also asking the public to
report any abuses in fares. During holiday
periods, some bus drivers and bus operators
raise their fares, which are set by the MOPT
and is not subject to alterations by the
drivers of the bus companies.
Officials of the Consejo de Transporte
Público (CTP) will also be joining the
Policía de Tránsito in providing a safety
spot check of the bus units, ensuring that
all units are in perfect mechanical order,
have the required permits to operate and
count with hygienic conditions.
The CTP said it will be posting officials on
various routes along the country, primarily
on the Pacific destinations and more the
northern border area with Nicaragua.
During Semana Santa there is a high demand
for bus service, as 1.5 million people are
expected to travel during the weeklong
holiday and many travel by bus.
