Beer Favourite Of Costa Ricans To Start Drinking Habit

A National Survey on drug use in Costa Rica 2006 by the IAFA - Instituto Sobre Alcoholismo y Farmacodependencia (Institute on Alcoholism and Drugs) revealed that Costa Ricans begin their drinking habit with beer.

For the last 15 years, beer has been the favourite alcoholic drink by Costa Rica to begin their habit, and is on the increase, as the use has climbed from 53% in 2001 to 56.4% in 2006.

The head of the IAFA, Guiselle Amador, said that this trend is global and could be explained because beer in comparison with other alcoholic beverages is cheaper, is the most affordable in the market and is socially accepted. Moreover, the alcohol content of beer is lower by volume than other distilled beverages such as alcohol, wine, vodka or whiskey.

The IAFA survey indicates that youth in Costa Rica begin drinking at age 13 and beer is their favourite starting points 60% of the time.

Although beer has a lower by volume alcohol content, it will cause drunkedness and intoxication and the same effect of distilled beverages.

One beer is equal to how many shots?

The simple answer is one car or bottle of beer is equal to an ounce of liquor. But, in reality, the answer lies in the alcohol content of the beer or liquor.

So, the complicated answers, is a once of whiskey in a shot of 40% proof is equal to 8 ounces of beer at 5% or 9.5 ounces of light beer (4%) and 3 ounces of wine at 13.5%. Now, if you happen to have a whiskey that is 50%, that changes things. That's 10 ounces of 5% beer, a full 12 ounces light beer, or 4 ounces of wine.
