Hack Collapses
Acelera Internet Service
Some 130.000 internet users of the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) Acelera
were left without internet service yesterday
following a "hacker" attack on the system.
Acelera delivers an internet connection over
the telephone line, was attacked by someone
generating a tremendous amount of "spam"
emails that saturated ICE' servers, causing
a collapse of the system.
The hacker attack occurred in the morning
and slowly ICE was able to restore service
by 4pm.
Elberth Durán, a ICE spokesperson, said that
the attack is worrisome as a similar
situation occurred last week, though that
attack was generated within Costa Rica.
Durán added that ICE is in the process of
purchasing new equipment that offers better
security against hacker attacks.
