El Salvador, Guatemala Report 70 Deaths
During Easter Holiday
At least 70 people were killed mainly in
traffic accidents and by gunfire in El
Salvador and Guatemala during the Easter
holiday, according to reports reaching here
on Friday.
The National Civil Protection System of El
Salvador reported Friday that at least 40
people died during the Easter holiday. The
death toll rose by 25 percent compared with
the same period in 2008 when 32 people died,
according to information reaching here from
San Salvador.
Salvadorian Civil Protection authorities
also said 238 people were injured in the
country between 8 a.m. local time Thursday
and8 a.m. local time Friday.
During the Easter holiday, there have been
236 traffic accidents in El Salvador
compared with 316 in 2008, which represents
a reduction of 25.32 percent.
Salvadorian authorities set checkpoints on
highways to keep drivers from drinking
alcohol or speeding.
According to information reaching here from
Guatemala City, at least 30 people died in
the Easter holiday, mainly due to gunfire
and traffic accidents.
Guatemalan National Civil Police (PNC) said
there have been robberies in shopping
centers and against tourists. Since Monday
about 19,000 agents of PNC and more than
1,500 Guatemalan soldiers have been
mobilized to protect the tourists in the
